Discover Huttoft Beach (Moggs Eye), Lincolnshire’s Best-Kept Secret

Huttoft Beach, also known as Moggs Eye, a quiet stretch of empty golden sand on the Lincolnshire coast

Table of Contents

Huttoft Beach — also known locally as Moggs Eye Beach — sits on the Lincolnshire coast between Sandilands and Anderby Creek, a short drive from Skegness and Ingoldmells.

It’s a quiet, rural stretch of sand backed by grassy dunes, with none of the arcades or fairground rides you’ll find further along the coast.

It’s just off the A52 near Alford (postcode LN13 9RR for the car park), so it’s a short, straightforward drive whichever direction you’re coming from.

What to Expect

The beach is wide and slopes gently into the sea, and at low tide it opens out into a long, flat stretch of sand — this is when it feels most spacious, though it also means the water can be a longer walk away than you’d expect.

There’s an offshore windfarm visible on the horizon, a modern contrast to the otherwise unspoiled dunes and open sky.

It’s a genuinely quiet alternative to Skegness and Ingoldmells: no flashing lights, just space and the sound of the sea. It suits:

  • Sunbathing or relaxing on uncrowded sand
  • Long coastal walks — the beach connects to the wider Lincolnshire Coastal Country Park, with paths running along the shore towards Sutton-on-Sea and Anderby Creek
  • Flying a kite in the open sea breeze
  • Letting kids build sandcastles with plenty of room to spread out
  • Bringing the dog — Huttoft is dog-friendly all year round, with no seasonal restrictions

The beach is also popular with bird watchers, sea anglers and surfers, and is recognised as one of the region’s better spots for stargazing after dark, thanks to low light pollution in the area.

Worth checking the weather forecast if a clear evening is the plan.

A note on swimming: there’s no lifeguard service at Huttoft Beach. If you’re going in the water, take care with changing tides and conditions, keep an eye on children at all times, and it’s worth reading the RNLI’s beach safety guidance before you go.

Parking at Huttoft Car Terrace

The car park sits right on the edge of the dunes, with space for up to 200 cars and access almost directly onto the sand — one of the more accessible beach car parks on this stretch of coast for wheelchair users or anyone with a pushchair.

That said, it’s still a natural beach, so the sand itself can be softer going once you’re off the tarmac.

Parking fees are enforced from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, between Good Friday and 31 October. Outside these hours and dates, parking is typically free — a good tip for early morning or evening visits, or an off-season trip.

Facilities

Freshly poured coffee at The Vista at The Boatshed café near Huttoft Beach

Huttoft Beach doesn’t have rows of seafront shops, but it’s better equipped than you might expect for a “quiet” beach:

  • The Vista at The Boatshed, a café right by the car park with a rooftop terrace and sea views, serving breakfast, lunch and coffee (it’s dog-friendly, and can close early in bad weather)
  • Public toilets, attached to the café building
  • Picnic areas if you’d rather bring your own food
  • Access paths suitable for pushchairs and visitors with limited mobility

Nearby Beaches and Planning Your Visit

If you’re exploring the area, it’s also worth knowing Huttoft’s neighbours along the coast.

Wolla Bank Beach, just along the dunes towards Chapel St Leonards, offers a similarly peaceful stretch of sand, while the North Sea Observatory at Chapel Point makes a good add-on if you’re already out this way.

For a well-rounded day, pair Huttoft with the bigger attractions at Skegness and Ingoldmells — Fantasy Island, Skegness Pier, and the local arcades — or with Gibraltar Point nature reserve if you’re after more walking and birdwatching.

However you end up spending your time, don’t forget to put on sunscreen!
